Having a Baby & Live Far From Family and Friends?
Date:February 28th, 2011 | Category:Babies, Showers | By Dana

These days it seems more the rule than the exception to not live within close range of family and friends. Be it due to job opportunities, wanderlust or the economy, let’s face it, we’re globe-trotters. When we decide to add kids to the mix, that makes them globe-trotting babies, which is awesome, but can be bring some challenges:

  • Who will babysit?
  • Where will the shower take place?
  • How will people send gifts? (Especially if you live overseas, this can get expensive!)

Lot’s to think about in a short amount of time! Not to worry, we’ve gotcha covered :) Read on…

We see this a lot: families on the move who are looking for a logistical solution to some of these issues. A Deposit a Gift baby registry is the perfect solution and can be used in a variety of ways:

  • If you have to travel pregnant to your in-person shower, forget lugging back gifts. Guests can print a DAG gift certificate and present it in something cute, like wrapped in a onesie or tied to a binky, which are nice, light and travel friendly.

  • Have a virtual shower, as Momtrends just suggested yesterday’s post! Create a DAG registry of virtual gifts, Skype everyone in for some together time.
  • Instead of a pre-birth shower, fly when you’re ready and have a welcome-to-the-world or “Sip n’ See” party where friends and family can stop by to see you and meet the baby. Same concept applies as above, if people want to give you a gift, they can do so via your Deposit a Gift baby registry and then you don’t have to carry anything back.
  • Even if you won’t be flying back home for a while, chances are that friends and family will want to send a gift to welcome the new babe. Take pitty on their wallets, help them avoid shipping and let them contribute to what you need via your DAG baby registry: crib, college, the stroller, swim lessons? You’ll need all the help you can get!

  • Chances are that as new parents you’ll be jonesing for a night out every once in a while, but without family around, who will babysit? Believe it or not, this can actually be a gift on your registry and people can contribute so that you’ve got enough for dinner, a movie and the all-important sitter!
  • If you’re living in a new place, this is a great opportunity to go exploring with baby. Gifts needn’t be limited to physical items…what about new experiences? Membership to the zoo or covering the cost for a mommy n’ me class can be a really memorable gift to broaden horizons, offer bonding time and be a great way to make new friends.

So much of what you really need for babies are big things that cost a bundle and are often good group gifts, but who wants to get stuck as the collections agent? Make it easy on people and divvy gift costs up into accessible contributions. This way everyone can give what they can without hassle, feeling good because they know that it went towards something really meaningful and useful.

Happy baby planning and feel good!
