A few months ago you heard me sing the praises of attending a local bridal fair to help you get your plan on. But what happens when along comes the baby and the baby carriage?
…or the sling….whatever your pleasure!
As Ricky Lake says in The Business of Being Born (an awesome film about the choices we all have in child birth — definitely worth a Netflix rent!) — I’m paraphrasing: When we are buying a new car, a house or even an entertainment system, we do SO much research, but often when it comes to having kids, we don’t realize that we have choices in how this will go down too. There’s no judgment in whatever decision you ultimately land on, it’s just the idea that you know you have options, you ask smart questions and you make decisions that feel right to you. I have to say, and maybe I’m alone in this, but when I saw the movie (probably over 4 years ago) it was a real awakening for me…and I was far from having kids, but I’m a planner and I like to give things a lot of thought and this idea of all the choices we have and setting aside judgment to make decisions that are right for us really hit home.
But I digress…Today there are so many resources out there to help with this information gathering and informative decision-making process. Whether you’re planning, pregnant or a parent of 2, there are a ton of resources out there. One kind of resource that I find especially helpful, and fun! are Parenting Fairs — frankly, for lack of a better word. They don’t sound as cute or sexy as Bridal Fairs. The planners of these events often do a bang-up job of planning an event that is part learning, part socializing and part shopping…What is better than that?!
In fact, we have a great event coming up in NYC this week on Thursday 5/19 called the Mommybites Summit. Last year when I was trying to learn more about the baby world since I don’t yet have kids of my own, I volunteered. I have to say I was truly impressed by the caliber of the learning sessions, the fun, the vendors and the prizes that they packed into 1 night. This year looks like it’s only going to get better, just check out this line-up.
