With the summer months here, many travelers are planning trips across Europe.  Graduates and newlyweds can take advantage of the free time and monetary gifts they’ve received to explore the culture that a different continent has to offer.  But how to make the most of generous gifts from family and friends?  Here are some tips to get the most bang for your buck!

  • Take advantage of budget airlines: In the past, travelers used the extensive rail system to navigate Europe, but many budget airlines, like RyanAir and EasyJet, offer flights between major cities for as little as 20 Euros.  Book in advance to find even cheaper discounts.
  • Plan ahead: Sure, it’s fun to arrive in a new country and end up where the city takes you, but to save money, know exactly where you plan to stay when you arrive.  Sites like Hostelbookers.com provide reviews and pricing of all hostels in major cities. Tripadvisor.com is also a great resource to get personal reviews and tips on a range of hotels.  Know what is most important to you in an accommodation– be it atmosphere, internet connection, or location – to be as comfortable as possible.  Keep in mind that the cheapest is not always the nicest, but you probably don’t plan to spend much time sleeping when you’re exploring a new country.

  • It’s the little things:  You might expect that flights and lodgings would be the most expensive parts of your trip, but the little costs add up.  Three meals a day can be upwards of 30 Euros, so consider buying two of those meals in grocery stores.  Souvenirs are fun, but 5 Euros spent on snow globes and paintings in every city is not cheap.  Consider buying postcards for less than a Euro to remember each city by.
  • Keep a schedule: It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re overwhelmed by all the attractions of a new city and miss out on something you’ve always wanted to see.  To fit in as much as possible, research your destinations and their museums, attractions, shows, and anything else you might want to see.  Consider entrance fees and transportation costs to create a schedule that allows you the time to see what is most important to you.
  • Have fun!  Yes, the best way to save money is to plan ahead and keep a schedule, but to be a savvy traveler, be open to new experiences.  Don’t miss out on the culture of a different country because you had your nose in your planner the entire trip.  Allow yourself some slack when spontaneity springs and know that you’re prepared to spend a few extra Euros when your fancy strikes.

With these tips, you can have the experience of a lifetime!  You don’t have to break bank to explore Europe.  Just remember to think ahead, plan wisely and have fun!

Sometimes it might seem like all we talk about is weddings! But we are MUCH more than that – Deposit a Gift registries can be used for any occasion when gifts are involved, and they are especially great for teen celebrations.  Sweet 16s, quinceañeras, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, and more can all be celebrated with Deposit a Gift!

Some of the most common gifts at these celebrations are cash, checks, or gift cards.  All these monetary gifts can get lost in the chaos of parties, leading to lost funds and complete disorganization when it comes to writing out the Thank Yous.  Save yourself or your teen the trouble, and create a DAG registry that allows these gifts to be compiled in one safe and easy-to-manage website.

Your teen’s Deposit a Gift registry can be much more efficient than other forms of financial contributions.  Gift cards often go to waste and cash accumulates no interest.  With DAG, your funds are compiled in one place, available as a check, Visa gift card, or direct deposit in the bank.  Many teens hoping to alleviate the financial strain of future college tuition can transfer this money into a college fund, or others might want to put it towards a big-ticket item like a new car or computer.

The best part about Deposit a Gift is the many options it provides.  You won’t be forced to spend gift cards at stores you don’t like or carry a wallet stuffed with change.  It’s the most responsible and efficient way to collect gifts at a celebration.  The next time your teen throws a party, think of DAG!

We LOVE a good laugh around here and Amy Poehler is the perfect source!  Check out her hilarious commencement address to Harvard’s Class of 2011.

I hope you laughed as hard as we did. What are some other good speeches from 2011’s graduation season?

We’ve been offering some hints to new grads for a few weeks now, but we’re not the only ones!  One of our favorite sites, The Daily Beast, has a few suggestions of their own.

Congrats to the new grads of 2011!  Graduation season is in full swing and many are ready to enter the job market.  But where to start?

Many college students hope to receive generous gifts from their family and friends upon graduation.  Though they might prefer to put these donations towards vacation or spending sprees, in the current economy many are forced to put it towards more practical uses.  Here are some of the best uses of graduation gifts for new grads entering the job market:

  • Clothing: First impressions are key when interviewing, and what better way to make a good one than with a new suit.
  • Computer: The best way to start a new job search is through one of the many sites devoted to career building.  Once you land your dream job, a computer is vital to keeping up email and research responsibilities.
  • Transportation: Airfare, gas, train tickets, and subway fares can add up as you trek from interview to interview.  Your family’s gifts can alleviate some of the costs.
  • Living Expenses: You might not have a job yet, but living expenses still need to be paid.  Put your gift towards groceries and rent until your first paycheck arrives.

These might not be the most glamorous uses of your graduation gifts, but they are the most practical.  Once you’ve secured your first job, you can put your hard-earned money to use and treat yourself to the vacations and luxuries you’ve passed on.  But to be successful in your job search, it’s important to be practical and responsible with the gifts you are given.  Good luck!
