These days, it’s all about living an eco-friendly lifestyle!  If you already recycle, buy local and drive less, then you’re doing a great job!  But how can you extend practices that are good for the planet to all aspects of your life?  Well, when it comes time to get away for special occasions, you can extend that green consciousness to your travels!  Karen Avery, owner and general manager of Box Canyon Lodge and Hot Springs in Ouray, Colorado, is here to tell us how!

If green travel brings to mind tree houses and outhouses, relax. You don’t need to sacrifice creature comforts to travel eco-consciously.  Many hotels, lodges and resorts are making great strides to preserve and protect the environment. In planning your trip, you can make a point to seek out unique lodging properties that make “green” part of everyday business.

Here in southwestern Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, it’s easier than you think. The Box Canyon Lodge has taken some important green initiatives already.  Look for initiatives like these – even in smaller, independent lodging properties – when researching and booking your trip, to make you – and the earth – even happier.

  • In-room energy efficiency: Beyond energy-efficient light bulbs, look for low-flow systems for toilets and showers, and a towel/linen reuse program. Some properties offer in-room recycling programs for aluminum, tin, metal, glass and plastic.
  • Paper, not plastic: All those little plastic bottles containing toiletries add up.  Some properties now use amenity dispensers to cut down on waste. At Box Canyon Lodge, guests will find in-room lotion and conditioning shampoo packaged in paper bottles, resulting in 92 percent less waste than plastic. Paper packaging also means elimination of parabens, phthalates and artificial colors. The manufacturer even donates a portion of the proceeds to support honeybee and sustainable pollination research.
  • Behind-the-scenes operations: Energy-efficient cleaning products and appliances go a long way in a property’s commitment to the environment. It’s easy to switch over to all-green cleaners without sacrificing quality.
  • Commitment to local suppliers: Properties that work with local suppliers when possible save on transportation and packaging costs while supporting the local economy.
  • Energy conservation: Many properties are paying attention to minimizing energy loss in their buildings. Look for high levels of insulation and energy-efficient double-paned windows.
  • Alternative energy: Box Canyon Lodge uses the geothermal water of the area’s natural hot springs to heat guest rooms and water for bathing and laundry (reducing natural gas consumption by 70 percent since 2007). Not all hotels can draw upon natural hot springs, but many can use some alternative energy sources or purchase carbon credits.

Conscious travelers can find many ways to plan a trip that maximizes positive environmental impact. When planning a vacation for someone committed to protecting the environment, paying attention to just a few of these tips can go a long way in creating the perfect trip as well as preserving the destination you’ll visit. Green travel can be easier than you think – no matter what your shade of green.

Congratulations to Courtney and Chad DeVoe, the first ever winners of the Most Creative DAG Shower Promotion!

When Courtney and Chad decided to begin their lives together, they knew they wanted to do something different. They wanted to bring their love of nature and sustainability into all aspects of their union, and that’s exactly what they did!

From their Registry Note to Guests:

Because we believe in living life safely, healthily, and sustainably, we are going to build an earthship together as our new home. Learn more about earthships here.

Instead of registering for the typical linens and dishware, the newlyweds registered for all the materials needed to build their earthship. And instead of the typical shower, they had a ‘Barn Raising Shower’ and invited all of their guests to come help them build their new home together. The guests had an incredible time helping this young couple and at the end of the day, something big had been accomplished!

Check out some of the great photos here:

We’re so impressed by Chad and Courtney’s dedication to something so important to them! It’s great to see it shine through on their registry and shower.   But Courtney really phrases it best:

At the end of the day we had accomplished so much, and people even came back the next day!  Thank you DAG for a memorable shower and the means to make it happen!  I’ll never forget getting a sledgehammer as a wedding shower gift!

And thanks to our Most Creative Shower Contest, they’ve got an extra $50 wedding present from Deposit a Gift! You can enter the contest too – one winner every calendar month. Happy planning!

Be sure to tune in tomorrow, when we sit down with Courtney to get all details on their amazing creative shower!

Time for some baby talk. More specifically, it’s time to talk about how to afford these lil cuties without costing an arm and a leg. One of the coolest things about the internet these days is being able to take advantage of all the resources available to help you stretch your budget…and when you have gift money handy when you need it most, it’s certainly easy to do! Lucky for us today we have Laura Cowan of 29Diapers.com here to teach us some tricks of the trade!

Deposit a Gift offers new parents a nontraditional way to register for baby, but how do you make the most of your registry? Here are 5 nontraditional (and green!) ways you can make your Deposit a Gift registry go further when getting baby gear.

1: Giveaways

Blogs such as 29Diapers.com host frequent giveaways for green baby products like cloth diapers and baby carriers. Because these giveaways appeal to a niche audience, the odds of winning are actually pretty good. I won $600 of cloth diapers and baby gear while pregnant, which really got me off to a good start saving money on baby gear. Check Prizey.net or Online-Sweepstakes.com to find many giveaways in one place, searchable by prize.

2: Freecycle

Freecycle groups are local email groups that swap free used household gear of all kinds, including baby clothes and gear. Baby clothing can cost an average of $1,000 per year, so this is a great option if you’re open to hand-me-downs. I once drove a little out of my way to pick up a lot of Freecycle clothes and discovered 4 trash bags full of designer pants, shirts, and jackets from 18 months through 5T. That one trip netted me about $1,000 worth of gently used toddler clothes. I’ve also been able to spread the wealth by giving away 15 bags of Freecycle clothing I didn’t need, passing on these hand-me-downs to friends who didn’t have time to join Freecycle. My baby bathtub, bouncer and changing pad also came to me via Freecycle (you can make sure these items are safe by checking the recall database at CPSC.gov).

The Anka Highchair is a great example of modern, eco-friendly baby gear: it's a high chair, booster seat and big kid chair in 1.

3: Flash Sale Sites

Flash sale sites are websites that put one or two items on sale for 50-90% off for just 24 hours, or until the item sells out. A number of these increasingly popular sites focus on baby and kids’ gear, so you can monitor them for deals when you’re looking for a brand-new item for a steal. This is a great way to get a car seat or a special item of clothing. Flash sale sites often sell out of each day’s item within minutes, so the best way to monitor these deals is to sign up for their newsletters and check back each day when you’re looking for something specific. BabySteals.com, GreenBabyBargains.com, Kids.Woot.com, and Totsy.com are a few of the most popular, but you can find tons more of these sites by Googling “baby flash sale site” or “kids flash sale site.”

4: Combined Sales

Did you know that you could save an extra 15-75% off a baby boutique or department store sale by combining special deals? Here are two scenarios to give you a few ideas:

1)    Boutique Sale: My local baby boutique offers clearance sales, but they also honor mailer coupons and post special coupons and deals for their Facebook fans, Twitter followers, and newsletter subscribers. Sometimes you can combine more than one of these deals for a super sale. Take a clearance item, combine it with a 20% off coupon, and add to that a gift card you bought for 15% off during a special promotion, and you’ve just made that pricey green baby carrier as affordable as the cheap alternative.

2)    Department Store Sale: Department stores like JC Penney and Macy’s offer coupons via mailer, plus they have clearance deals online that sometimes can be combined with a free shipping deal. But did you know that many mailer coupons, which vary across the country, can be accessed via coupon code aggregators such as RetailMeNot.com and CouponChief.com so you can choose from dozens of coupons? Or, if you’re shopping in-store, combine these special deals with an early bird special. I once returned an out-of-season outfit the day after Christmas during Macy’s after-Christmas sale and combined a baby clothing clearance sale with an early bird special and a mailer coupon to get 5 onesies, 2 shirts, 1 pair of pants, and a matching onesie, bib, and sleeper set. For free. Now that’s a sale.

5: Green Parenting Choices

Two parenting choices are both green, good for your baby, and can stretch your budget: cloth diapers and breastfeeding.

1)    Cloth Diapers: Modern cloth diapers are made of high-tech fabrics, fasten with Velcro or snaps, and are easy to clean by just throwing a waterproof bag of them in the washer and dryer twice a week. They’re better for your baby than disposables, which contain chemicals such as dioxin and SAP (which have been associated with endocrine disruption and cancer), they keep 1 ton of trash per year per kid out of landfills, and they will save you up to $1,000 per year per kid over disposables!

2)    Breastfeeding: Breastmilk has been shown to do everything from kill cancer cells (!) to give adolescents stronger leg muscles than their formula-fed friends. And the financial benefits of breastfeeding also last a lifetime: formula costs $1,200-$1,500 per year per kid. Put that in a college fund and you’ve already saved 15% of the money needed to send your baby to a public university! And since as few as 11% of U.S. moms currently breastfeed to 12 months, just think of all those formula containers could be kept out of the landfill by more moms breastfeeding.

Modern cloth diapers, which are easy to use and clean, are just one nontraditional way to save big bucks on baby.

I hope these tips have given you some ideas to help you stretch your baby budget further. The best part is, many of these tips are green. What parent couldn’t use a few win-win options while preparing for baby?

It’s engagement season and that means wedding planning is in full swing! If you’re in the beginning stages of the process, every bit of advice helps. Many couples today are interested in going as green as they can with their wedding, but it often feels daunting if you don’t know how. We’re so happy to welcome the delightful Atlanta-based wedding planner William Fogler to the blog today. He’s got some great tips to help you green-up your wedding. BONUS: these tips will not only help you go green, but save green too!

With so many excessive expenditures out there for your wedding, WM Events would like to offer some suggestions on how to address these vital elements of your big day while taking the environment into consideration.

1. Invites- Rather than cluttering your guests inbox with extra paper, you have a few options to take the pressure off the environment. The greenest option is to send invitations electronically and skip the printing process altogether. However, recycled paper coupled with soy ink is a perfectly sensible option.

2. Dress- For most brides, this white gown is the most important piece of clothing you will ever wear.  But beautiful, refurbished dresses are easy to find and significantly cheaper. Think about adding an element of significance by repurposing your mother’s wedding dress into a more modern option or perhaps adding a duster jacket over your new gown. Lastly, don’t be afraid to upcycle your dress post-ceremony into your new favorite cocktail party outfit.

3. Decorations- Your grandmother has an extensive china collection to rival a French monarch? Your great aunt has silver vases cascading from her attic? Your uncles massive library has classic editions of your favorite books? Use these heirloom pieces for a vintage chic decoration theme that will blow your guests away without blowing the budget.

4. Flowers- Local flowers (perhaps from your own garden!) free arranged without land-filling oasis is a great way to accent your venue. Allow your guests to take the arrangements home or take them yourself to a nursing home to give them a second life. Choosing to go the non-floral route with paper or button flowers is another viable option.

5. Favors- Utilitarian or organic gifts can captivatingly display your appreciation for your guests arrival and attendance at your event. Homemade desserts, reusable water bottles, beeswax candles, and picture frames with a photo from the event’s photobooth are all great ideas to thank your guests while offering them a keepsake from the event.

For those of you who haven’t joined the party on our Facebook page yet (hint, hint…), I didn’t want you to miss out: As we continue to grow and spread the word, you will see us in more and more places :) To get the job done, we came up with our 1st magazine ad that debuted in the new Winter issue of Eco-Beautiful Weddings. Whatdya think?!?

If you haven’t checked out Eco-Beautiful Weddings yet, now’s the time. The 1 year anniversary issue just came out TO-DAY and it’s gor-geous. But on top of that, it offers a lot of practical advice, especially for the folks who I like to think of as accidentally eco. I think a lot of us would like to be greener, but it can be intimidating if we don’t know how, or if it seems like it’s going to take a lot of effort or cost a ton more. But as I’ve learned from people like Katie, the editor, it doesn’t have to be. Check out her side-by-side on pages 32-33 on what makes something more green or less green. You might be surprised!

This issue features other services and people who I really love and maybe you will too:

  • Candice Lapin from Para Ti Novia, the most comprehensive Latina Bridal site
  • Carolyn Gerin, from Anti-Bride, who just launched her new app to complement the blog and the book
  • Glö for awesome uber-modern Paperless invites & wedsites
  • Little Borrowed Dress, a great new service that I like to think of as the Netflix of Bridesmaids dresses
  • Emily Anderson, author of Eco-Chic Home, with an article offering fantastic Newlywed Entertaining Ideas
